With new location Lenny’s launches low calorie menu

By: Michael Sheffield

Lenny’s Sub Shops has launched a new “Under 500 calories” menu that coincides with the planned opening of a new location on Pauline later this month.
The new menu features 12 kaiser sandwiches that are currently on the restaurant’s menu, but Brent Alvord, president of Lenny’s said the company wanted to inform customers of the healthy alternatives on Lenny’s menu. The sandwiches start at $3.95.
“A lot of people don’t realize a sub shop can be very healthy depending on which sandwich you get and what you get on it,” Alvord said. “You can eat healthy, or you can load it up with extra bacon, extra cheese, extra oil and extra calories.”

Positivity

We take pride in many things at Lenny's, from the fresh products to the satisfied customers. Still, one of the things we're most proud of is our high standard of customer service and the outstanding employees that make it possible. The internet makes it easy and convenient for complaints, but we're often taken back and touched when people go to great lengths to give a compliment. We feel that praise deserves to be heard, not for us, but for the employees who represented themselves in such upstanding ways. We're proud of you.

From Shop #49 in Memphis, TN:

"I am filling out this comment card to send some due recognition to the PM staff. During my visit tonight, another customer was being extremely rude to the employees preparing her food - to the point that other customers were looking around at each other shocked. Rather than respond harshly (or worse, as we all wanted to do), they continued to give her the same level of service they give every other customer and did what they could do to diffuse the situation while she continued to pepper them with rude comments. I was impressed by their professionalism and the manner in which they treated her with infinitely more respect than she gave tot hem or than she deserved. Their manager/owner/operator deserved to know that quality people are running the store on the PM shift in particular."

From Facebook in regards to Shop #350 in Ft. Walton Beach, FL:

"The other day, I was on my way home from the grocery store, and I saw an older woman pulled over. Then, I noticed the kind stranger who had pulled behind her to change her tire. I wasn't surprised to see it was the local Lenny's vehicle, since the employees there are some of the nicest people I've come across, but I was impressed. I was a little surprised when I saw that it was he owner of my favorite two shops. No wonder everyone there is so incredibly kind. It starts at the top."

Lenny’s Sub Shop Announces ‘Under 500’ Menu Board Transitions Helping Spearhead Calorie Awareness Across Sub Sandwich Industry

Memphis-Based Sub Shop Offers Voluntary Menu Transparency for Additional Guest Satisfaction

Memphis, TN – Lunch competition has never been more competitive and to address the lunch crowd’s growing need to remain healthy during this important meal, Lenny’s Sub Shop, a 150-unit sub sandwich franchise, has rolled out voluntary calorie information for select sandwiches in all of its sub shops nationwide. Nutritional and allergen information for all menu items is also available at lennys.com.

Considering the sensitivities many consumers have to high calorie intake, with the move, the sub franchise will not only continue to offer high-quality sub offerings, but do so starting at a value price point of $3.95.

With the initiative, the sub franchise has positioned itself as a pioneer in the healthy, good value sub option for lunch-goers. They have also created a new category on the menu called “Under 500,” with specific menu items under 500 calories per regular order serving, which includes all toppings except olive oil and cheese.  Featured are 12 every day sandwiches, such as Classic Kaiser, Italian Kaiser, Roast Beef Regular Sub, Roast Beef Kaiser, Mile High Turkey Regular Sub, Mile High Turkey Kaiser, Club Kaiser, Deluxe Club Kaiser, Chicken Salad Kaiser, Tuna Salad Kaiser, Veggie Regular Sub and Veggie Kaiser.

“We are extremely pleased to announce the rollout of this new menu objective,” said Brent Alvord, President of Lenny’s Sub Shop. “Though there are no mandatory federal rules necessitating the mandate of information at this time, we want to remain a consistent and transparent option for our guests, so those looking to monitor their food intake can now better manage their particular choices. The way we see it, at the end of the day, the quality of our subs speak for themselves – we have nothing to hide.”

The announcement will also be supported in-store with fresh and targeted visual displays featuring “12 Fresh Sandwiches Under 500 Calories Starting at only $3.95” content. Featured with a lime-green color display, the menu items introduce a new visual perspective to the Lenny’s Sub Shop board, while simultaneously providing an inviting, intriguing and cost effective lunch solution for guests.

“A lot of exciting things are happening at Lenny’s, in-store and in social media,” Alvord said. “While we have visually tweaked our menu and shop display, the cornerstone of Lenny’s remains intact. The quality and value of our products won’t change.”

How a Retired FedEx Exec Built a Mini Sandwich Empire
By: Jason Daley

In 2004 Edith Kelly-Green was settling into retirement. After almost 30 years with FedEx--ultimately serving as vice president and chief sourcing officer for FedEx Express at the company's Memphis, Tenn., headquarters--her days consisted of waking up early, reading at Starbucks and working on the finances of several nonprofits.
A suggestion from her family prompted Kelly-Green to consider opening a Lenny's Sub Shop. "My daughter was a college sophomore at the time and said, ‘I eat there all the time. You have to invest!'" she remembers. "I knew the CEO and called him, thinking I'd just invest some capital. But he convinced me I'd be happier as a franchisee."

Lenny's Featured in Kiplinger's Personal Finance

Lenny's was featured in an article titled, "Jump-StartYour Career With a Franchise" in the April 2013 edition of Kiplinger'sPersonal Finance.

The article features various franchisees discussing why they chose a career in franchising and how they have found success in the industry. Edith Kelly-Green, who owns ten Lenny's Sub Shops in Memphis and Oxford, Miss., says she knew when she started back in 2005 that her business would have to compete with other sandwich shops, some on the same block. Kelly-Green, who retired from Federal Express in 2003, says her stores stand out because they offer larger sandwiches than her competitors. She also works hard to provide a welcoming environment. "The key is customer service," she says.

A franchise is quick way to invest in a ready-made enterprise
By: Sandra Block

When Rowley Mayo, 62, was downsized from his job as a finance executive in 2009, he wasn’t ready to stop working. But Mayo soon learned that companies weren't lining up to hire workers in his age group, especially those accustomed to earning six-figure salaries

Rather than accept early retirement, Mayo, who lives in Elk River, Minn., decided to start his own business. While researching opportunities, he consulted with a franchise broker who introduced him to Mr. Appliance, a home-service appliance-repair company with 148 locations in the U.S. After talking with franchise owners and company executives, he launched his franchise serving the Minneapolis suburbs in December 2010.

Lenny's featured in Memphis Business Journal

Lenny's Sub Shop was recently featured in an article titled “Social media: Lenny’s meal ticket” in Memphis Business Journal. The article included a section based on Lenny’s from the interview we secured for Brent Alvord with Michael Sheffield.

In the article, which includes two great store photos, Brent talks about the success Lenny’s has had with its social media brand initiatives. He does a great job talking about how the brand has connected with its fans and followers to handle all social experiences, and has increased its social fan base better than its larger competitors.

Social media: Lenny’s meal ticket
by Michael Sheffield
Sub sandwich chain rewards fans, draws customers

What was once its slowest day of the week has transformed into one of the busiest days of the week for Lenny’s Sub Shop, thanks to Facebook.

Since launching its Facebook page three years ago, Memphis-based Lenny’s, which has 150 locations across the country, has grown its fan base to more than 85,000 followers, with an average of 578 fans per location. By comparison, Subway, with more than 37,000 locations around the world and 16.4 million followers, has an average of 442 fans per location, according to industry statistics.

Brent Alvord, president of Lenny’s, says the company has tapped into its followers through its Social Wednesday promotions.

Social Wednesday provides Lenny’s followers with coupons ranging from free chips and drinks to free subs, and has increased annual sales among the company’s top franchisees by more than 9 percent. Lenny’s top franchisees average about $694,000 per year. The top 5 percent of the company’s franchisees average around $1.2 million in sales per year.

Lenny’s top store is based at Memphis International Airport and is owned by Kelly Green Restaurants, which owns eight Memphis locations.

Alvord says Social Wednesday evolved from a Valentine’s Day coupon the company launched three years ago that gave customers a free sub. That giveaway alone increased the company’s modest fan base by 43,000 people. Alvord says Lenny’s increased its fans by another 20,000 last year.

The company worked with Chicago-based No Limit Media Consulting on its web initiatives.

“We analyze how many friends those people have and how many their friends have, which is more than 19 million people,” Alvord says. “It continues to build momentum.”

Nick Powills, chief brand strategist for No Limit Media, says Lenny’s has an active engagement with its customers through initiatives like Social Wednesday.

No Limit estimates a non-Facebook fan will spend about $150 per year in the restaurant, while a Facebook fan will spend $310 annually.

“If you can increase impressions, you can encourage them to come in more,” Powills says. “It’s important to build your fans organically. If it’s a popularity contest, I want to win one with real people instead of names I bought from someone else.”

In addition to the customers participating, Alvord says franchisees have to buy in to the promotions.

“They’re independent owners, so we cannot mandate particular things and I can’t fix pricing or an offer,” Alvord says. “So we try to make sure it’s something they’re OK accepting and something we think will be appealing to the guests as well.”

Reuben Brunson, president of Rocket Fuel, which works with its clients on social networking projects, says the best way for a company to succeed in social media marketing is to make sure it is creating a targeted message for its web audience, which is most likely different from the traditional audience. That lack of a message distinction is often where campaigns fail.

“There are things you can do on the web like ask questions and start conversations,” Brunson says. “But you have to be careful to not come across too sales-y. That doesn’t mean you can’t do specials, but you don’t want to be unbalanced.”

Brunson says direct conversation with customers can create a level of trust, and if done the right way, your customers become your best advertisers. But only if they trust you.

“In the old days, if you had a great experience at a restaurant, you’d tell your friends or coworkers; same with negative experiences,” Alvord says. “In today’s world, people tell their Facebook friends. We can head off negative exposure and seek the customers out to make it right, but we can also proactively seek customers. It’s prime territory.”

  5. 1664 Sycamore View Rd., Memphis, Tenn. 37134
  6. 8265 U.S. Highway 51, Memphis, Tenn. 38053

Q: Where are you from?

A: I am originally from Memphis, Tenn. I grew up there and attended college at The University of Memphis.

Q: What was your career before franchising?

A: Before becoming involved with Lenny’s Sub Shop, I worked at FedEx for 10 years. My business partner and best friend since sixth grade, Lawson Fisher, worked with a communications firm for the same length of time before we decided to go into business together.

Q: How did you learn about the brand?

A: Lawson and I knew of the product because we were customers, but we also had a relationship with the owners of Lenny’s corporate. When we decided to get into the business, we acquired five stores right off the bat. It was something we really jumped into, and we have continued with that level of enthusiasm ever since. My wife, Cris, is also an owner and operator of the locations, and we all have taken on a store that we manage ourselves.

Q: What was appealing to you about joining a franchise system?

A: It’s great because we’re able to run our own business, but we have the backing of a big company. With Lenny’s headquartered in Memphis, and our personal relationship with its owner, the franchise has this great family atmosphere. It makes it that much more fun working with Lenny’s, having that feeling that you’re working with family.

Q: What skills from your previous jobs have helped you in your business?

A: Lawson and I were both in the customer service industry, so we each knew how to handle the customer relationship. But, it wasn’t the food industry, which we discovered is a lot different. As far as our customer relationships, our backgrounds gave us a good start and while I was at FedEx I couldn’t help but learn about business and how things are run at a strong company.

Q: How has the economy affected your business?

A: Although some aspects have made it harder, overall the economic situation has benefited our business. In one respect, it’s really competitive to secure a loan from a bank right now, but on the other hand a lot of people are opting for less expensive dining options. We got into the business before the recession hit, and even though things have been hard we have been able to grow each of our restaurants through that time.

Q: What obstacles have you overcome to get where you are today with your business?

A: The biggest obstacle we’ve overcome so far has been the shock of doing business in the food industry. This industry is one where there can be a lot of employee turnover, so we had to learn how to manage that and how to find good people and hold on to them. Once we were able to do that, we have seen great success.

Q: What makes your business different?

A: Although there are a lot of sub shops out there, I really don’t feel like we have many competitors. We provide a product that you don’t get at any other sub shop. Every person who walks through the door is getting a fresh sub — we slice it right there for them, or we grill it right there. They’re getting a half-pound of meat and cheese on their sandwich, and we take care of the guest in every way possible. All around, it’s just a very different experience than you’ll get anywhere else.

Q: How does your business connect with the community?

A: In all of our locations, we try to do some sort of giving back. In Memphis, we have provided boxed lunches for various golf tournaments and fundraisers. In our newest location in Jonesboro, Ark., we’re just five minutes down the road from Arkansas State University, so we’re making it a priority to reach out to the university. We are looking forward to doing something for the students there.

Q: What are your expansion or development plans?

A: We really think that Jonesboro, population wise, could hold another two to three stores. However, we’ll have to see how this first location goes.

Lenny's grabs guests with 3-D TV giveaway

Lenny’s was just featured in Nation’s Restaurant News in an article called “Lenny’s grabs guests with 3-D TV Giveaway.” The article goes in depth into Lenny’s latest Scratch N’ Win promotion and discusses how this has been a successful way to engage its guests with the brand. In addition to that Lenny’s saw a 5 and 6 percent sales increase during the promotion period with an 11 percent sales hike one week. Lenny’s is also reaching out to its guests through Facebook promotions, the new Substantial Rewards loyalty program and testing out mobile-phone apps too. Check out a portion of the story below or read the full article here.

Lenny's grabs guests with 3-D TV giveaway

When Lenny’s Sub Shop officials reprised last year’s Scratch & Win promotion this fall, they decided a contest prize consisting of a 3-D home entertainment center was the best way to reach out and grab customers’ attention.

“With technology evolving, 3-D TVs are the thing people want to have but won’t go out to get till prices drop,” said Brent Alvord, president of the 170-unit Memphis, Tenn.-based Lenny’s.

The home entertainment center, which replaced a $100,000 cash prize offered in 2009’s Scratch & Win contest, was one of several major tweaks that made the promotion a “fantastic success” its second year, Alvord said. (Read More)

Lenny's Spotlight: Memphis Midtown Location

Lenny’s Sub Shop #49, located at Cooper and Madison, is Midtown at its best. The Lenny’s motto of More Food, More Taste, and More Personality® is showcased to every customer in a family-like atmosphere. Melanie Barden is the manager and has worked for Lenny’s since she was fifteen years old. She still has customers that come in and remember her in those tender years, and she now is a mom of two boys. Eric Williams, who describes himself as a “sandwich artist”, came to the Overton Square Lenny’s relatively recently, but was recommended by a veteran. Eric’s brother told him that Melanie was “awesome to work for.”

Giving back to the Memphis community is a major tenet of the store’s purpose. In addition to supporting the Healthy Kids, Teens Fight for Life and the University of Tennessee Health Science 5Ks, the store shows true Midtown character through being a proud sponsor of the Wing Factory’s Annual Turkey Giveaway, the Cooper Young Festival, Rhodes College athletic teams, Memphis Theological Seminary, and concerts and productions at neighborhood churches. “We believe in giving back to the community while supporting the whole spirit of Midtown.”

Melanie Barden and Zack Williams from the Midtown store were a part of the Wing Factory’s annual turkey giveaway, handing out over 500 cookies and 1,000 coupons at 6 a.m., and distributing 1,500 turkeys to community families. “The smiles on all of those children’s faces at 6 a.m. in below freezing weather is what made it all worth it to me” said Zach Williams, a shift leader at the midtown store and marketing coordinator for The HK Group, which store #49 is a member.

Events like this are the reason that the Midtown store keeps such regular customers coming in, simply due to the fact that the employee-customer relationship is so sincere. Lenny’s was founded on SIP: providing great Service, with high Integrity in a Professional manner.

Melanie Barden, the store’s General Manager, who just celebrated 10 years with Lenny’s Sub Shop, is the premier example of a leader who exemplifies those values with a strong focus on customer service and satisfaction. Her employees work as a team with the goal of having every customer leave the store with the ultimate Lenny’s Sub Shop experience.

If you haven’t tried the chicken or tuna salad, or the best Philly Cheesesteak in Memphis, check them out at 12 South Cooper. “Our new French Dip Sandwich is rocking and now you can place your order online from home, office or your phone,” said Williams. “Lenny’s Sub Shop has been a proud resident in Midtown for almost ten years. We take our Midtown citizenship seriously and are always looking for ways to improve our service and increase the fun experience you can expect at our store.” Said Melanie Barden. “Thank you Midtown!”

Franchisee Spotlight: Edith Kelly-Green, Owner of 11 Lenny's Sub Shop Locations

Each week, Lenny's will highlight a franchisee. This week, Edith Kelly-Green, is our spotlight franchisee.

Franchisee Since: 2005
Franchise Locations: Memphis, TN; Oxford, MS; Batesville, MS; Nashville, TN

How Edith Got Started with Lenny’s…

In 2003, Edith retired from a 26-year career at FedEx as the VP and Chief Sourcing Officer. At her time of retirement, Edith’s daughter, Jayna, was a college student at Rhodes College and ate at Lenny’s Sub Shop frequently. She was the one who introduced Edith to the concept, who at the time had no intention of owning one of her own. Edith’s plan was to retire and relax.

Her main motivation for becoming a franchise owner was her family. Edith wanted a business that she could involve her children in. Her son had just graduated from Florida A& M with a MBA and had always wanted to be an entrepreneur. Now, he along with Jayna, are Edith’s business partners.

Together, they own 11 locations. They started their development in Oxford, Edith’s hometown. That location was for sale at the time she was looking at buying and it was close to the university where she thought she would have a great customer base. Initially, Edith had envisioned owning 10 locations and she has surpassed her vision. Edith and her family own locations in Memphis, TN; Oxford, MS; Batesville, MS; and Nashville, TN.

What intrigued Edith about Lenny’s…

Edith loved that she could be a business owner with her family. She was exposed to Lenny’s through her daughter and knew George and Brent Alvord, the Lenny’s executives. When she looked more into the brand, she was extremely impressed by the values of Lenny’s and the way the Alvord’s ran the company. It ultimately aligned with her philosophies and she saw an opportunity for a return on investment for her family’s future.

Something Interesting about Edith’s Story…

Edith is the only Lenny’s franchisee with an airport location. She owns the Lenny’s location in the Memphis airport, which is one of Lenny’s highest producing stores. She purchased this location in July of 2005.

Dian Trosclair considers herself a victim of modern-day miracles.

After 28 years in the corporate world, Trosclair’s executive position with ServiceMaster was eliminated last January as part of the weak economy and outsourcing.

It provided the perfect window for the 55-year-old Knoxville native to move back to East Tennessee from Memphis and become involved in the community through the five Lenny's Sub Shop stores she owns with her brother, Sean Norris.

"In my corporate career, charitable things were addressed mostly by writing a check," said Trosclair, who spent 12 years at FedEx and 15 at ServiceMaster. "I was never really able to get involved. I feel like this is my opportunity in life to make a difference." (Read More)

By Toby Sells

When a new Lenny's Sub Shop opens at Main and Peabody Monday, the Memphis sandwich-maker will have nearly saturated its hometown market.

The new store at 153 Main will open in the spot formerly occupied by Blues City Pastry. The high-traffic corner is the end of the Main Street Mall, sits right on the trolley line and is a gateway to the South Main and Beale Street entertainment corridors.

The new Lenny's is opening less than a mile from a current Downtown location at 22 N. Front.

"It's right in the heart of Downtown and is an extremely high-traffic area," said franchise co-owner Lawson Fisher. "The timing was right, and it's just a great location." (Read More)

Franchisee Spotlight: Tripp Williams and Lawson Fisher

Each week, Lenny's will highlight a franchisee. This week, Tripp Williams and Lawson Fisher are our spotlight franchisees.

Franchisees Since: January 1, 2008
Franchise Locations: Memphis, TN; Millington, TN; Little Rock, AR

How Lawson and Tripp Got Started With Lenny’s Sub Shop…

The idea to become Lenny’s franchisees was on a completely random day for Lawson and Tripp. These best friends since sixth grade were casually dining at a local Memphis restaurant when they starting talking about their desire to become entrepreneurs. At the time, Tripp worked at Fed Ex and Lawson, at a company that sold telephone systems. Both were stable in their jobs and satisfied, but had a passion to run their own business.

Lawson and Tripp had many experiences with Lenny’s growing up in Memphis as Lenny’s was founded in Memphis and a local Memphis favorite. The two friends immediately thought about franchising Lenny’s in Memphis as a result of their nostalgia for the brand.

Lawson and Tripp engaged in conversations with the executive team at Lenny’s in September 2008 and four short months after beginning the discussions, Lawson and Tripp were operating their first four stores: two in Memphis, one in Millington and another in Little Rock, AR.

Now, about two years later, the best friend franchisee team is opening their fifth location in a coveted downtown Memphis location in one of Memphis’ most historic buildings where the original hardwood floors are still intact and customers can enjoy outdoor seating overlooking Memphis’ downtown.

What Intrigued Lawson and Tripp about Lenny’s…

Lawson and Tripp whole heartedly believe in the product, the food. All the meats and cheeses are freshly sliced and each sub is made to order. It’s also in the way that the product is delivered to the guests that excited Lawson and Tripp. Lenny’s delivers a unique experience to each guest called the “Lenny’s experience,” in which every guest is greeted, their hot food is delivered to their table, and Lenny’s team members clean up afterwards.

Something Interesting About Lawson and Tripp’s Story…

Lawson and Tripp have been best friends since 6th grade. Both attended the University of Memphis and are young entrepreneurs at 33 and 32 respectively. Lawson is married to his wife, Christi with a baby on the way. Tripp is engaged to his fiancé, Cris.

Lenny's Opens New Location in Downtown Memphis!

Total Market Saturation: Lenny’s Sub Shop Brings Mouth-Watering, Mile-High Stuffed Subs to Unique Downtown Memphis Location
Equipped with a Fanatical Following and Plentiful Portions, Sub Shop Franchise Plots 24th Location in Memphis

Memphis, Tennessee – Armed with a fanatical following full of folks often expressing their deep admiration of Lenny’s Sub Shops with three powerful words, “I Love Lenny’s”, the now 157-unit sandwich specialists, is opening a new Memphis location. In a coveted downtown spot in one of the city’s most historic buildings, Lenny’s is continuing to dominate the sandwich sector in Memphis, and the new location brings Lenny’s to a total of 24 Memphis locations, 30 throughout the Mid South, which marks complete market penetration for Lenny’s in the Mid South region.

The prime location downtown will open April 19 at 153 South Main St. To keep the historic appeal of the building intact, the new location boasts the original hardwood floors and provides this Lenny’s location with a new look and feel. In addition, it will offer outside seating overlooking downtown.

Opening their fifth Lenny’s location at only 33 and 32 years old respectively, Lawson Fisher and Tripp Williams, are Memphis natives who grew up in Memphis and attended the University of Memphis. Their desire to develop multiple Lenny’s locations came from their nostalgia of the locally-based brand, and their vision of being successful business owners. Fortunately for the two young entrepreneurs, the Lenny’s system has set up a solid foundation for success.

“The fanatical fans, the customer experience and the quality of the food are the reasons for our decision to continue expanding Lenny’s in Memphis,” said Lawson Fisher, who, along with his business partner and best friend, Tripp Williams, own five locations in the metro Memphis area and Little Rock, AR markets.

Part of the brand’s allure is its commitment to its fans. Not all sandwich shops are created equal, unfortunately for the competition, Lenny’s has proven that. That's why hungry people across the nation are talking about the quick-casual restaurant serving fresh meats on generously-portioned subs for over a decade (the Authentic Philly Cheesesteak 15-incher weighs about a pound). Unlike those serving processed meats, Lenny's high-quality steak is from Philadelphia and is trucked twice per week to its locations across the country.

“Our fans have given us every reason to keep growing in Memphis,” said Fisher. “Tripp and I have plans to keep developing Lenny’s. We’d like 10-15 stores total.”

Lenny's stands a step above the competition by offering dining services that other quick-casual restaurants don't. For instance, when you place your order at the deli case, you can watch while the Lenny's crew member slices the meat and cheese fresh to order. Employees are frequently seen in the dining area asking if you're enjoying your food or if you need a drink refill. The average combo meal including chips and a drink costs about $8.70, and refills are free. Don't look for a garbage can on the way out; a Lenny's staff member will clean off the table for you.

“Exceptional service has always been a staple to our guest experience. I think Social Media has widened that scope of demand even deeper. Positive word of mouth now spreads electronically throughout our Social Media footprint, and it is vital for us to maintain that positive buzz,” Brent Alvord said. “Our commitment, across every part of the restaurant, can be seen in the way our fans rave about our brand.”
