Behind the Line at Lenny’s Sub Shop: We Love to Make People Smile

Not everyone can say they love their job, but I can. My name is Andrea and I’ve been a team member at Lenny’s Sub Shop® in Memphis since our restaurant opened almost a year and a half ago. Have you ever wondered what it’s like to work in a restaurant that specializes in serving sub sandwiches in a way that strives to make someone’s day? Well, read on and I’ll fill you in.

I challenge myself to work tirelessly to ensure every guest has the perfect meal. You know the drill—you bend over backwards, paying attention to even the smallest detail to make a sandwich exactly how someone wants it. It doesn’t matter if you think a request is ridiculous—you’re not the one eating the sandwich. You just want to make sure your guest is happy.

Well, that’s what I do everyday! From the time I open My Lenny’s with our general manager, to setting up the counter with the appropriate marketing materials, to assembling that last sandwich of the day, I keep our guests in mind. We’ve built some pretty solid relationships with many of our every day customers. So much so that when we see some of our regulars pull up in their cars, we start assembling their sandwiches so they can walk right up to the counter and pay. Talk about serving up a “Wow” factor! Our guests love it when we pay special attention to them. And if someone wants to mix it up, we’ll create whatever sandwich they want as long we have the ingredients.

I believe that what goes around comes around. When customers leave here happy, they come back again and again and that makes my job fun. It’s the friendships I’ve developed with my co-workers and customers that keep me coming back for more, and that type of atmosphere is contagious. Our guests tell us they repeatedly return not only for the good food, but also for the good company.

Oh, did I mention I love to eat at Lenny’s, as well? The French Dip to be exact. I started off as a customer and now I’m a full-time employee. I’m even here on my days off. I guess that gives new meaning to the phrase, you are what you eat!

History 101: The Birth of the Philly Cheesesteak -Lenny’s Sub Shop

Ever wonder how a classic sandwich like the Philly Cheesesteak came to life? The story is a good one, and one that continues to evolve as culinary professionals and everyday sandwich lovers alike tinker with their versions of the hoagie favorite. The online encyclopedia, Wikipedia, defines a cheesesteak as a sandwich made from thinly sliced pieces of steak and cheese in a long roll. True fans of the classic sandwich, though, know it’s not quite as simple as that!

The cheesesteak burst onto the restaurant scene back in 1930, at, get this, a hot dog stand near South Philadelphia’s Italian Market. As the story goes, hot dog vendor Pat Olivieri one day decided to make a steak sandwich for lunch using onions and meat from a local butcher. A taxi cab driver drove by and, noticing what he was making, asked for one of his own. Olivieri served the first cheesesteak to the cabbie with no cheese and sold it for a nickel! Word spread from there, and the rest is history as they say.

As people all over the country began to crave the mouth-watering sandwiches, many restaurant however, have been successful. In 1998, the first Lenny’s Sub Shop opened in a suburb of Memphis. The popularity of the shop’s sub sandwiches, headlined by its signature Philly Cheesesteak—made with premium steak from the heart of Philadelphia—prompted rapid growth of the restaurant chain and continues to expand across America.

Today, authentic cheesesteak sandwiches like the ones served at Lenny’s Sub Shop® include huge portions of premium steak, grilled onions and cheese piled high on fresh-baked bread. They’re cooked to order and served hot off the grill. While Lenny’s Sub Shop can’t serve them for a nickel, we do offer unmatched value for guests’ hard-earned dollars and provide a level of customer service that demonstrates our commitment to ensuring our guests return again and again.

So while there will always be some debate as to how the best Philly Cheesesteak sandwich should be made, those who love to eat them know the secret lies in the taste. Whether it’s topped with American, Provolone or our favorite—Swiss American—cheese is anyone’s choice, but a true Philly Cheesesteak mixes the flavors of steak, cheese and extra toppings in a way that leaves the person enjoying it always wanting more. Try the Philly Cheesesteak—or any other sandwich for that matter—at Lenny’s Sub Shop® and you’re bound to see some of the many reasons why Everybody Loves Lenny’s™!
